JOSHUA BURKE RIPS THE TYPHOON
13 year old St Winifred School Student Josh Burke surfed exceptional on Wednesday night at the Quiksilver King Of The Grom qualifying event held at The famous Walt Disney World ,Typhoon Lagoon water park, competing against 30 of the top junior surfers U-16 years old from across the United States and Puerto Rico,Burke was on par with the level of competition, placing 5th and winning The Most Progressive surfer of the event!
Burke recently signed a 2year deal with traction pad giant X-Trak & Magma surf wax and rides the ever faithful Burkie Boards that are shaped and produced by World class shaper Rich Price.
Patrick Schmidt from Manasquan New Jersey wore the crown of the King, the winning wave was a brilliant display of wave riding, taking off right against the pool wall coming off the bottom with a powerful off the top,a nice speed turn in the middle to set up for a huge fluent air reverse 360 on the closeout, literally cementing his place on the throne and a trip to France for the Grandfinal!
Who would think of going to landlock city of Orlando to surf? Matt Kechele, team manager for Quiksilver and organizer of the 2010 KOTG thought of the idea "every year instead of getting an ulcer worrying over if mother nature is going to produce or not,why not have guaranteed waves" Kechele states, and a great idea it was!
The Typhoon Lagoon pushes out a 5ft wave every 90 seconds providing a fair playing field for the young future pro surfers and they did not disappoint, throwing adult type turns, and launching big air reverses on the closeout.
Coach for Joshua,Alan Burke says" This was a very unique event, very cool scene, watching the best juniors from the US rip in a pool", "Josh adapted well ,the buoyancy had very little effect but he complained of the visibility of the wave due to the clarity of the water and the reflection from the lights, everyone had to deal with it so it was very fair" Burke states.
Joshua will be taking part in three international events over summer,Rip Curl gromsearch New Smyrna beach,East Coast Surfing Championships,Virginia Beach and The NKF in Cocoa Beach.

Barbados Surging Association Announces Annual Coaching Program
We are starting a 4 part Coaching Course. This is due to commence at 9 a.m. on May 15, 2010. All interested persons are invited to be present at the East Coast venue - Parlor, Bathsheba when the introductory course begins.
The Introduction is a 3 part series. Introducing participants to activities, these are - competitive surfing, running drill, surfing heats and feedback from both coaches and judges.
The second step of the program would be basic. Portraying fundamental areas; basic scoring measures, drill and feed back.
Module 3 will incorporate heat preparation, heat strategy and management of heats, judging and feed back.
Module 4 will be high end maneuvers. This would target the more advanced surfers who will be handling bigger waves and mastering technical maneuvers. Additionally topics to be covered are nutrition, exercise, stretching and strength training.
The BSA views this step as necessary so as to incorporate all surfers in a competitive environment. This program includes juniors, both men and women surfers. All will benefit from this exercise.
We strongly recommend participation of our juniors in particular, in light of the up-coming Junior Pro and the November Pro scheduled for later in August and November; you are urged to maximize on this opportunity provided by the BSA. Once again we will be making this an annual event; this move is to get our surfers ready so that they are more prepared for participation at the international level.
In these sessions the BSA is also going to play our part for the environment and clean our beaches used for these sessions.
JOSHUA BURKE, Barbados most improved surfer and 2009 Barbados U-12 National Champion,
surfed his way into the hearts of the Americans at the 46th Ron Jon Easter Surf Festival in Cocoa Beach Florida three weekends ago, throwing airs and tailslides and shooting the pier with style, landing a two year deal with traction pad giant X-TRAK and MAGMA surf wax.
Surf Legend, Four times Womens World Surfing Champion Frieda Zamba Shaw and team Manager for X-TRAK & MAGMA surf wax was equally impressed with the Cocoa Beach crowd of 13 year old Burkes potential !,
As team manager for X-Trak surf traction and Magma wax I have been looking for that under the radar kid to represent X-Trak and Magma wax in the Caribbean. Im confident I found him in Barbados..Joshua Burke! Joshua surfed his way into the finals of the Ron Jon Easter fest causing quite a buzz on the beach with his progressive surfing at such a young age. One look at this kid and I knew he was exactly what we needed. From his mature surfing talent to being coached by a former international surf star in his dad Alan Burke to the pure surf stoke look in his smile. We are stoked to have Joshua on our team!
August 2009, Burke competed in the Rip Curl Gromsearch New Smyrna beach regionals, narrowly qualifying for the November Nationals in Salt Creek California, then was dealt with a first round elimination due to an interference call,After these two events something clicked in Josh states Coach Alan Burke, I think the realization of the talent internationally hit a nerve causing his competitive jean that runs through out the entire Burke family to activatesays coach Burke.
X-TRAK/MAGMA team rider Burke has a very busy 2010 ahead, besides competing in the next local (Burkie Junior Surfing championship Series)BJSCS/Ashford Dairies event on June 12th at Longbeach,he will be competing in three international events from Aug 19th- Sept 8th, Rip Curl gromsearch in New Smyrna beach, 48th East Coast Surfing Championships Virginia beach and Ron Jon/National Kidney Foundation Cocoa beach Pier Florida.
FOR THE LOVE OF SURF THE CUBA EXPERIENCE
My journey to visit the Hispanic Island of Cuba for PROJECT CUBA was an inspirational first Pan-American Surfing Associations (PASA) trip to open doors and develop relationships with our Spanish Speaking Caribbean Neighbour.
My Friend Icah Wilmot from Jamaica had been working on a discovery trip to Cuba for some time and was trying to get some sponsorship from various international Surf Companies and magazines. It all looked really good until the last minute. It ended up being way too expensive so just about everyone backed out. Maile Aguerre, the President of PASA, took the opportunity that Icah was working on Cuba to join in his initiative and help put together the first Cuban Surf Nationals and a PASA invitational in the Island at the same time as we were there. Icah and I surfed the event representing our own countries against participants from Cuba and The Dominican Republic. Those were the 4 countries participating in this, the first ever International Surfing Event in Cuba, which really meant a lot to the surf lovers of Cuba and to us being the first participants and hopefully the first of many.
PASA conducted a training/judging seminar lead by Marcos and Juca of Brazil, which was very well received by all of those involved in the sport there and our job was to showcase our talents as top surfers in our respective countries and to let the Cuban surfers experience the competition first hand. There were only two divisions for the competition. This was the bodyboarding and the open. There were no girls participating and therefore I was asked to surf in the open. At the end of the prize giving I donated one of my personal boards to top Cuban surfer Umberto Rodriguez who had recently broken his favourite board and also a 7 board given by Alan Burke of Burkie Boards, compliments of Nick Parker, to Yaima Espinosa who runs a kids surf training camp in Santa Fe, La Habana, Cuba.
The final of the open went as follows:
1st Icah Wilmot JAMAICA 2nd Junior Gomez - DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
3rd Umberto Rodriguez CUBA 4th Ametza Nicholls BARBADOS
The Association of Cuban Surfers as it translates is not yet recognized by the Cuban Government. It is run by self appointed Eduardo Valdes who makes, fixes, lends and donates boards to whoever cares to learn the sport if he happens to be in a position to do so. Hopefully this can change soon.
There is also Cuba Surf, headed by Luis Manuel Mazorra. This is a group of young surfers who pretty much do the same as well as make sure that any surfer coming to experience the surf of this island is taken to where they should go, told where they should not go, shown a great time, personally entertained and provided with an insight into the life of a Young Cuban Surfer.
Ametza Nicholls
National Sports Council Award of Junior Outstanding Sportsperson Female.
This Award was given to this talented, dedicated athlete based on her 2009 results as follows:
In January 2009, Chelsea became the first surfer in Barbados to win a NSC Youth Award for her achievements in sport in 2008 at such a young age and an Appreciation Award as one of the three athletes nominated as Junior Female Outstanding Sportsperson of Barbados for 2008. She was given this award for her outstanding results on the local, regional and international scene at the age of 12. She ended the year ranked No 2 in the Open Ladies and Under 18 Girls, was the CSN Makka Pro and Soup Bowl Pro Womens Champion in 2008 and achieved a World Ranking of 25 in the Under 18 Girls Division at the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships held in Seignoss, France, the highest ever ranking of a Barbadian junior female at these Championships.
Chelsea went on to dominate the local surf scene in 2009, winning both the Ladies Open and the Under 18 Girls Division in the first Surfer of the Year event held in early February. In the School Surfing Championships she won the Under 16 Girls Division and placed second in the Under 18 GirlsDivision and also won the award for the most radical manoevre among the girls.
Later in the year, Chelsea once again created history by becoming the youngest female to ever represent Barbados at the ISA World Surfing Games, the Olympics of Surfing held in Costa Rica in July. She was the youngest competitor at this event and achieved a world ranking of 33 in the Open Womens Division, surfing against the best women in the world. She now has the highest international ranking of a female surfer in Barbados.
Chelsea ended the year as the BSAs Surfer of the Year Champion in both the Under 18 Girls Division and the Open Ladies Division. She is also Barbados Under 18 Girls National Champion.
Regionally, Chelsea was also a dominant force to be reckoned with. She competed in the three events of the Caribbean Surf Network Tour and was crowned Ladies Champion in all three (3) events the Makka Pro held in Jamaica in July 2009 , the Sans Souci Pro held in Trinidad in November 2009 and the Soup Bowl Independence Pro held in late November, 2009. With these results, Chelsea became the youngest ever CSN Caribbean Ladies Champion at age 13.
In addition, Chelsea also competed in the Junior Boys Under 21 Division on the CSN Tour and ended the year ranked 4th , competing against the regions best Junior boys.
ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Ecuador in April where she progressed to the third round of the repecharge)
Chelsea also competed in the Ripcurl Gromsearch series in the USA . In New Smyrna she was second overall and in the finals in Salt Creek, California she placed 7th overall.
This thirteen year old second year student of Queens College has a deep faith in God and credits Him mostly for her success. But she is also grateful to all those who played a part in her development her parents, former national champions Zed layson, Alan Burke and Peter Hill, and Peter Corbin and Nick Donawa, her coaches and her sponsors ROXY, Red Bull and ACP Associates Ltd.
